This work aimed to study some epidemiological features and the clinical profile of patients having psoriasis visiting the Dermatology and Venereology departments of Tanta University Hospitals and to assess the impact of disease on their quality of life.
Psoriasis is a genetically determined, systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disease that affects predominantly the skin and joints. It is now recognized as a systemic disease, which is associated with multiple comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and major cardiovascular adverse events. These can shorten the lifespan of patients with severe disease by up to 5 years.
The presentation of psoriasis varies from dusky red scaly papules to raised plaques on the elbows, knees, or scalp to superficial pustules dispersed on the palms or soles or, in rare cases, widespread pustules all over the body. The plaque, guttate, small plaque, inverse, erythrodermic, and pustular forms of psoriasis are among the clinical spectrum's variants. Psoriasis can be diagnosed clinically. However, a skin biopsy may be required for cases in which the presentation is not typical.
