The goal of this observational study is to learn about current pre-anaesthesia practices in Denmark and patients' experiences of pre-anaesthesia consultations as well as what matters to patients before anaesthesia.
The questions the study aims to answer are:
What are the current pre-anaesthesia practices in Danish public hospitals. How do patients experience pre-anaesthesia consultations in Danish public hospitals.
What matters to patients before anaesthesia in Danish public hospitals.
On the day of surgery, patients answer an online survey about what matters to them when undergoing anaesthesia and whether they spoke with an anaesthesiologist or nurse anaesthetist about the anaesthesia.
Data from the medical chart are obtained to support patients responses. For patients receiving a pre-anaesthesia consultation, we will summarise the degree of person-centredness experienced by patients.

| Measure | Description | Time Frame |
|---|---|---|
| What matters to you when undergoing anaesthesia? | Open responses to the question about what matters to the patient before anaesthesia. Will be analysed using content analysis focusing on the manifest content rather than the latent content. | Baseline |
| Pre anaesthesia consultation | Descriptive data on how many patients had a pre anaesthesia consultation. Response options: Yes, no, don't know. | Baseline |
| Person-centred pre-anaesthesia practice | Patients who had a pre-anaesthesia consultation answer four questions from the subsection "Working with patients' beliefs and values" on the Person-centred Practice Inventory - Care (PCPI-C). Each item is rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree, disagree, bneutral, agree to strongly agree. The subscale score is calculated as an average of the four items. There are no reverse scoring items. A higher score indicates that patients perceive a higher quality of person-centred care, characterized by stronger alignment with their values, shared decision-making, and authentic relationships with staff. The "Working with patients' beliefs and values" subsection consists of the follwoing questions: "Staff make an effort to understand what is important to me" "I feel able to say to staff what is important to me" "I feel able to give staff feedback about my experience of being cared for" "In caring for me, staff use what they know about me as a person" | Baseline |
| Patients' experiences of pre-anaesthesia consultations | Qualitative study with semi-structured individual telephone-interviews using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. | Baseline |

|---|---|---|
| Educational level | Categorized data where patients mark their highest level of education. Data will be presented descriptively. | Baseline |
| Employment status | Categorical data. Patients mark their employment status. Data will be presented descriptively. |
| Measure | Description | Time Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Response rate | A response rate will be calculated based on the total number of eligible patients and the number of responses to the questionnaire. | Baseline |
